In this day and age you might think everyone has a computer and can navigate it with ease. I am here to tell you this simply is not the case. Some parents are lost when it comes to computers and most especially with “FaceBook” and their childs profile. Here are some helpful hints provided by Stacey Dewitt, head of Connect with Kids.

1.) If you haven’t already, join facebook. Dewitt says it helps parents understand what its like for their child to be inside a social network.

2.) Parents must have their childs password on Facebook. Make this part of the deal! Dewitt says these social networks are not private and shouldn’t be treated as such.

3.) Give your child a Code of Conduct. Dewitt said “You have to say to them if your going to use the technology, here’s what the standards are, here’s what the etics are in our family. I always say if you wouldn’t show it or say it to me, your mother, don’t do it online.”

4.) Do Not cut off your childs access to the computer. Dewitt said “You can’t really control their access because its everywhere. You can shut it off in your home but they can go to a friends house. They can get it on somebody else’s computer.”

5.) Do not allow your child to be online for hours a day. Dewitt said “It’s just not productive for kids to be sitting around on cellphones and computers and on Facebook and inside social networks all the time.”

6.) Educate yourself on technology. Learn how to use Facebook. Parents who don’t understand the technology could be putting their kids in jeopardy. Dewitt said “That’s what you do when you put a child on the computer and say I don’t really get it, I’m not going to worry about it, you figure it out. It’s like dropping them off in downtown Atlanta and saying “See you in 24 hours, hope it works out.”

There are a number of links that can help parents learn more when it comes to Facebook.

Happy October Everyone,

I hope you all are enjoying the cooler weather we are having. A lot has happened the past couple of weeks. First let me acknowledge the flood and flood victims. Barber has been collecting school items since the flood took place. The need is still ongoing and we would love to have your help: school supplies, band-aids, hand sanitizer, tissues, markers, etc…as you may have seen on the news. Please send in your donations to the front office.

Donations: PTSA is in the works on a couple of ideas to help the hungry and breast cancer. As soon as we get final approval we will let you know. Simple things that you maybe throwing away could help others in need.

October is Fire Prevention Month. Please make sure you have replaced your batteries in your smoke detectors. A fire extinguisher is a good idea if you do not have one. Check your filters and fireplaces, make sure these items are cleaned to prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, if you don’t have one already, please make an escape route for your family in the event of a fire. As a mother, escape routes are not enough, please have a neighbor plan also. Where do your children go once out of the house, which neighbor do they go to for safety, if not the first choice, please have a second choice. This will help everyone when trying to locate children after a fire and make sure they are not still in the house. Next week we will collect “goodies” for our local fire and police departments for all their efforts. Cookies, brownies, items that can be frozen are a good idea. We will collect items Mon. Tues. and Wed. and will deliver them on Thursday.

Spirit Wear: We have heard your request and are presenting a full front zip hoodie. The hoodies will be unisex, and one uniform design for all. They will have Barber Middle School across the chest in the styles familiar to our youth such as that of Aeropostle and A&f. The color of the hoodie is black (durable for all sports and weather) with silver writing. They are available sm-2x. The cost will be $20.00 and $22 for 2x The year will not be on these so that they may be worn for more than one season and possibly by a younger sibling. For those that don’t like wearing coats, these will carry you thru until the spring. Order forms available Oct. 5th. First order due Oct.19th to get back by Oct 29th.

ewsletter First Edition: Our first newsletter went out last week. We hope you enjoyed it and found it helpful. If you did not receive it, please ask your student for the copy. Extra copies available in the office.

Open Treasurer position: We now have two interested parties for this position.
